Blue Comets nip Wildcats, 7-0

ASHEBORO — Asheboro High School nipped Eastern Randolph 7-0 last weekend in a defensive struggle played in miserable weather conditions. The win moved the Blue Comets to 3-0 in the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference and 6-2 overall while the Wildcats slipped to 1-2, 1-7.

Both teams mounted several scoring threats but poor playing conditions hampered offensive units for both squads.

The only score came with 6:59 left in the third period. The touchdown came on a busted play, with quarterback Walter Rush keeping the ball and slicing into the endzone on a 10-yard scamper. Eastern Randolph responded with a threat of its own, marching deep into AHS territory. But a pair of penalties helped stall the drive.

As a steady rain fell, putting a damper on the homecoming crowd, the two teams drove into each other’s territory but stalled inside the red zone. At intermission it was a scoreless standoff, although the Wildcats had been inside the Comet 25 yard line twice.

During the closing minutes, E. Randolph stopped Asheboro on downs and took over at its own 23.

The Wildcats marched inside the Comet 30, thanks to a 48-yard aerial from QB Tucker Coward to Terrance Street. The threat ended with two incomplete passes. Asheboro’s TD drive covered 56 yards in five plays.

The Blue Comets posted a 10-9 edge in first downs and a 210 to 189 advantage in total yards. Dimitri Faglier paced the offense with 156 yards rushing on 29 attempts. AHS was just 1 of 5 passing.

Malcolm Greene led the Wildcats with 47 yards on nine carries while Coward connected on 5 of 16 passes for 89 yards. Street hauled in two receptions for 79 yards.

This Friday Eastern Randolph looks to rebound at Randleman in a 7:30 p.m. MPC clash. The Blue Comets visit Trinity for another conference showdown.
