Volleyball tourney
ASHEBORO – Action began earlier this week in the MPC Mid-Piedmont 3-A Conference volleyball tournament with Asheboro High School serving as host for play in the semi-finals and finals. Southwestern Randolph High School captured the regular season title in the MPC, and earned a first round bye. The higher seeded teams hosted first round matches.
The hosting Lady Blue Comets took the runner-up slot and faced seventh-seeded Southeast Guilford in opening round play. Third-seeded Eastern Randolph High School entertained sixth-seeded Randleman High School. The semi-finals were planned for Tuesday with the championship finals set for Wednesday at 7 p.m. Admission is $5.
Fourth-seeded Ragsdale High School faced fifth seeded Trinity High School in the first round, the winner advancing to the semi-finals to meet Southwestern Randolph. If a match is needed to determine a berth in the NCHSAA playoffs, that match will be played prior to the championship contest.
Wildcat jayvees topple SWRHS
RAMSEUR – In a Mid-Piedmont 3-A conference jayvee football clash last week, it was visiting Eastern Randolph High School taking a 22-8 victory over Southwestern Randolph High School. This was a make-up contest, having been rained out earlier in the season. The win improved ERHS to 1-1 in the MPC and 2-3 on the season.
Pacing ERHS to the latest win was Terrance Blackwell on a 38-yard touchdown run and Terrance McDonald on a 47-yard pass interception return. Jalen Alston had a 13-yard scoring run. Rounding out the ERHS scoring was Alston throwing two-point conversion passes to Terrance Odom and to Blackwell.
On Oct. 16, the Wildcats host Asheboro High School in another key MPC clash.
Lady Wildcat spikers top Ragsdale
JAMESTOWN – Eastern Randolph High School tuned up for this week’s Mid-Piedmont 3-A Conference volleyball tournament by turning back hosting Ragsdale High School in the regular season final match. The Lady WIldcats won on scores of 12-25, 25-20, 26-24 and 28-26, led by Kayla Saliga with 17 kills and two aces. Courtney Kivett posted 10 kills and 21 digs, while Kaitlen Poe had nine kills, three aces, 16 digs and five blocks.
Other leaders included Whitney Routh with 34 assists and Olivia Link with two aces and 11 digs. ERHS closed out the regular season in third place in the MPC at 7-5 and 14-6 on the season.
In results from earlier in the week, the Lady Wildcats hosted Southwestern Randolph High School, but lost in a tough five-set match to the Lady Cougars, who captured the regular season MPC title, 25-19, 14-25, 25-21, 24-26 and 15-9. Kivett had 13 kills and 15 digs, Poe had 15 kills, four aces and 17 digs to lead the ERHS effort, Anna Karam had 24 digs, Saliga had 15 kills and Routh had 35 assists.
SWRHS was led by Kelly Maness with 45 assists, Brittany Perdue with 18 kills and Kasey Cain with 16 kills and five blocks. Caroline Lambeth had 10 kills and two blocks and Amelia Frye had eight kills and a block.
In jayvee action, the Lady Cougars took a 25-17 and 25-16 win. Chelisea Chriscoe had six kills and six points and Paige Cogan led in assists and posted seven points.
Eagles lose in soccer, volleyball
GRAHAM – Faith Christian School was swept last week by hosting Alamance Christian School in varsity soccer and volleyball. The Lady Eagles were defeated on scores of 27-25, 23-25, 25-10, 17-25 and 16-14 as FCS slipped to a 6-8 record. Brooke Davis led the Faith Christian effort with 12 points and seven kills.
Other leaders included Victoria Boggs with 10 kills and three blocks, Meredith Davis with eight points and 12 assists, and Jessica Jarrett with seven kills.
Faith Christian was a 25-17 and 25-13 winner in jayvee results, to move to 7-4. Ashton Allred led the way with eight kills and Nikki Smith had seven points and seven assists.
Alamance Christian School won 2-1 in varsity soccer, as Clay Whitley had the lone Eagle goal. Faith Christia slipped to 11-3.
Alamance Christian took a 5-2 win in the jayvee soccer match, with Aaron Avelino posting both goals for th 2-7-2 Eagles.
In earlier results, Gospel Light won 13-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 and 25-13 in varsity volleyball. Meredith Davis topped FCS with 15 points and Lindsey Kilby had 15 assists. Boggs had 10 kills.
Gospel Light won 25-2, 19-25 and 25-22 in jayvee action. Nancy Foust had eight assists and Kalyann Mizdike had eight points. Allred added five kills.
The Eagles lost 3-1 in varsity soccer. Adam Edmisten had the only Eagle goal. A 0-0 defensive standoff was the result in the jayvee match.
SWRHS wins tournament
NEW LONDON – The fifth annual Emma Ducey Golf Tournament was played this year at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point. Earning top team honors was Southwestern Randolph High School with a final total of 291, well ahead of the 313 team total by runner-up Providence Grove.
Rounding out the team scores it was Asheboro in third place at 346 and Eastern Randolph High School in fourth at 369. Randleman and Trinity high schools do not have a girls golf teams.
A new individuals tournament record of 80 was captured by Andrea Robbins of Providence Grove, a former member of the Eastern Randolph golf squad. Robbins carded rounds of 41 and 39 to set the new record.
The Emma Ducey Tournament is played each year in honor of former Asheboro High School golfer Emma Ducey, who was killed in a car accident in 2004.
Sydney Jones led the Lady Cougars charge, firing rounds of 42 and 48 for a 90 to earn the silver medalist honors. The SWRHS leaders were Lauren Auman (90), the bronze medalist, Lauren Edmonds (111) and Sarabeth Ritch (115).
Providence Grove was led by Robbins and Abbey Staley (103), Madison Thomas (130), Nichole Nickels (130) and Chloe Mueller (141). Pacing Asheboro was Ashely Swaney (114), Addie Schoenberger (115), Jordan Chilton (117), Chelsea Haga (128) and Suzanne Needham (129). Topping ERHS was Tessa Davis (111), Kaitlyn Hunt (127) and Anna Pell (131).
