ERHS honors star athletes

As a large turnout looked on, Eastern Randolph High School honored its standout athletes recently at the Wildcats' annual Athletic Awards Banquet. Athletic Director Charles Arrington welcomed the crowd, noting the school was extremely proud of its 234 student scholar athletes.
The highlight was the announcement of the male and female athletes of the year. Ethan Bailey was selected the top male and Lindsey Gaines earned the female award.
Bailey was a standout on the Wildcats' varsity football squad, earning All-Conference in the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference. He was also a leader on the wrestling team, again earning All-Conference. Gaines was a star on the cross country team, named Most Valuable Player and All Conference. She was also MVP of the track squad, member of the indoor track team and awarded the Booster Club scholarship for her achievements in cross country.
The Wildcats racked up runnerup awards in varsity and jayvee football, varsity and jayvee softball, and varsity and jayvee volleyball.
The Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference honored Rick Larrick as Coach of the Year in boys basketball and Danny Burgess in golf. Carlo Brunello was named Swimmer of the Year while Brad Monroe won the 1000-points award for scoring 1,037 points for his career on the basketball team.
A look at the awards:
Football awards were named by Head Coach Burton Cates and they included: Jarod Bowman, MVP; Ethan Haithcox, Best Offense; Ethan Bailey, Best Defense; Zack Webster, Most Improved-Offense; Dexter Brooks, Most Improved-Defense and Gold Helmet Award; and Heath Mueller, Team Leader. Haithcox accepted a scholarship to attend Campbell University next season, Brooks is going to Wesleyan and Mueller will attend Methodist College.
In jayvee football, Simeon Milliner was MVP.
Honored in varsity girls volleyball were: Traci Teague, MVP; Ashlee Gordon, Best Offensive Player; Chareesa Brooks, Best Defensive Player; Erin Frye, Most Improved; and Kaitlen Poe, Coaches Award. In jayvee volleyball, Allie Hylton was MVP.
Christian Crifasi was MVP of boys cross country and Lindsey Gaines was MVP of girls cross country.
Miguel Uribe was selected MVP of boys soccer while Ferando Medina was presented the Coaches Award. Aleeza Quilit was MVP of girls soccer and Kari Allred received the Coaches Award.
Earning awards in varsity wrestling were Erik Grevenstuk, Most Improved; Ethan Bailey, MVP; and Daniel Conrad, Coaches Award. Kasey Jones and Bill Stanley were named co-MVPs in boys tennis while Meredith Hinshaw was MVP for the girls.
Boys basketball winners included: Jeff Davis, Best Offense; Brad Monroe, Best Defense; Wesley Alston, Most Improved; Steven Livengood, Team Before Self; and Brad Monroe, MVP. Jordan Smith was MVP in jayvee basketball.
Girls varsity basketball winners were: Haley Hardin, MVP; Lauren Brady, Best Defense; Kristie Langley, Most Improved; Lauren Brady, Team Before Self; Haley Hardin, Best Offense; and Chareesa Brooks, Best Defense. Kassie Lowe was MVP for the jayvees.
MVPs in swimming were: Carlo Brunello for the boys and Jordan Nixon for the girls. Courtney Kivett received the Coaches Award.
Eric Hutchins and Abby Staley were MVPs in golf.
Mallory Horner (Team Before Self) and Whitney Smith (MVP) were winners in varsity cheerleading and Courtney Maness was MVP in jayvee cheerleading. Christian Crifasi and Lindsey Gaines were MVPs in track.
Varsity baseball winners were: Jack Shelton, MVP; Jordan Smith, Best Offense; Andy Flowers, Best Defense; Landon Allen, Most Improved; and Kyle Williams, Team Before Self.
Varsity softball winners were not announced as the team was still participating in state playoffs. Jayvee softball winners were; Jessica Gordon, MVP; Meagan King, Most Improved; Jana Cheek and Codie Rhodes, co-Offensive Players of the Year; Kaitlyn Scheuering, Best Defense; and Allie Hylton, Coaches Award.
The Eastern Randolph High School Wildcat Booster Club presented scholarships to seniors in each sport. Winners were: Preston Jones, football; Haley Hardin, girls basketball; Brad Monroe, boys basketball; Traci Teague, volleyball; Dallas Welborn, girls golf; Parker Henry, boys golf; Ethan Monroe, baseball; Carrie Allred, girls soccer; Nick Dezern, boys soccer; Paige Beager, girls tennis; and James Scotton, boys tennis.
Others included: Malory Horner, cheerleading; Layne Comfort, boys cross country; Lindsey Gaines, girls cross country; Daniel Conrad, boys track; Beth Calloway, girls track; Jack Shelton, swimming; Eric Grevenstuk, wrestling; Katelyn Kidd, softball; and Tarra Brooks, indoor track. Lindsay Farrington was awarded the Fidelity Bank Award.
Ron Berbaum, "Voice of the Wildcats," served as master of ceremonies. Service awards were presented to Ronnie and Terresa Teague, Eddie Luck, Harold Kivett, Larry Ellison, Rick Freeman, Bobby and Maridee Kivett, Ernie York of Sourwood Forest Golf Course, Tahia Langley, Doug Vickers, Randy Dunlap, John Allen, Eddie and Sue Ellen Cockman, and Darrell and Condace Stanley.
