Realignment to split county teams

Roger Whitehead
Special to The Randolph Guide

RAMSEUR Barring last-minute changes, county prep teams will be divided into three new conferences when realignment goes into effect for the 2009-2010 school year.

The N.C. High School Athletic Association finalized plans recently with approval scheduled for May. At that time officials can consider alternate proposals or ratify the realignment as presented.

Realignment is done every four years based on projected enrollment. Currently, all four Randolph schools and Asheboro are members of Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference.

Under the current realignment plan, Eastern Randolph, Trinity and Randleman will drop to 2A while Asheboro and Southwestern Randolph will remain 3A. ERHS and Randleman would join Jordan-Matthews of Siler City, Graham, Burlington Cummings, Bartlett-Yancey and the new Providence Grove in a new 2A conference.

Asheboro and SW Randolph would move to a 3A league with North Forsyth, Ledford, Northeast Guilford and Southern Guilford. Trinity and the new Wheatmore High School would join Winston-Salem Carver, High Point Andrews, Reidsville and Atkins in a 2A conference.
