AHS tops ER in baseball

ASHEBORO — Asheboro erupted for four runs over the last two innings to seal a 7-1 win over Eastern Randolph to close out the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference baseball regular season last week.

The Blue Comets jumped out front 3-0 in the bottom of the first before ER starter Jordan Smith settled down to blank Asheboro until the late stages of the contest. He yielded a pair of safeties in both the sixth and seventh frames. Two errors, a hit batter and a wild pitch aided the AHS rally.

Asheboro finished at 5-6 in the MPC and 13-7 overall, while E. Randolph slipped to 2-6, 3-16.

The MPC tournament is this week with higher seeded teams hosting first-round contests. Semifinal and final rounds are Wednesday and Thursday at Grady Lawson Field at Eastern Randolph.

Ragsdale was second followed by Randleman, Southwestern Randolph, Asheboro, E. Randolph and Trinity. First-round matchups pit Trinity at Ragsdale, ERHS at Randleman and Asheboro at SWRHS. Three teams will go to the playoffs.
