When Clarence "C.H." Goldston left home on a recent Saturday afternoon he thought he was going to his son Jason's home to see Jason's wife's mother who was visiting from South Carolina. As he walked by the garage the door went up, revealing several relatives and friends who were there to help him celebrate his 75th birthday. Was he surprised, startled, shocked? He was all of that and more. I wish he could have seen his face.
I asked him how it felt to be three-quarters of a century old. "It feels great," he said. He says overall he enjoys pretty good health, not perfect, but pretty good. "I don't get around as fast as I did," he added.
C.H. is the third of 10 children of the late Mr. and Mrs. Hurley and Ethel Goldston, and was born April 17, 1933, in the Stout Chapel Community and grew up there.
He now lives in Ramseur and is a retiree of Ramseur Interlock Knitting Company after 35 years of service. His wife, Shirley Cheek Goldston, their daughters, LeRose Williams and Rhonda Goldston, and their son, Jason and his wife, Maxine, hosted the party. He has four grandchildren and is a member of the Stout Chapel United Methodist Church.
Do you remember the little rhyme about April showers bringing May flowers? I know the rhyme is talking about rain showers, but in my family April showers bring showers of birthdays. C.H.'s daughter LeRose was born April 2. My deceased mother and brother had April birthdays, others in the family include my granddaughter, Jessica, and her other grandmother Jessie Boyette, my brother-in-law Roland Harris, both of my sister's daughters, Una and Wilsonnia, and Wilsonnia's daughter Margertha have April birthdays.
