Two sisters had recent birthday celebrations. Nezzie Spinks' 96th birthday was celebrated at the home of her daughter, Cathy Coward in Ramseur.
Her younger sister Sophronia Smith was honored with a birthday party – her 94th – at the home of their niece, Pearlean Laughlin, in the Stout Chapel Community.
The two sisters were the two youngest of the 12 children born to the late Benjamin and Cornelia Cheek Goldston and the only survivors. Their grandfather, Aaron Goldston, was born a slave.
Mrs. Spinks was born Jan. 31, 1912 and Mrs. Smith was born Feb. 18, 1914. They grew up in the Stout Chapel Community and attended the Stout Chapel UMC where they are still members.
Mrs. Spinks was very active in the church and served as head of the ushers ministry for several years. She isn't able to attend now because of her health but she still helps support her church. She has one daughter and two grandsons.
Mrs. Smith is still able to attend most services and is the church mother. Despite her age, she still has a flair for fashion.
She was never blessed with children but there are numerous neices and nephews sho love her and care for her needs.
Have a good week.
