New street fest debuts this weekend
ASHEBORO —
The Sunset Street Festival presented by Asheboro Parks & Recreation will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 10.
Among the features will be arts and crafts vendors, artist demonstrations, a children's play area featuring a variety of inflatables, games and activities and an antique car show.
Food vendors featuring funnel cakes, sno cones, blooming onions, lemonade and more will be on hand.
Live music will include a variety of rock, oldies, bluegrass, country and Christian music during the day.
An antique car show will be in Bicentennial Park and the public will vote on the Best of Show, Best Interior and Best Exterior. Judging will end at 2 p.m.
Awards will be given out at 3 p.m. Spaces are limited.
Advanced registration is free but registration the day of the event is $5.

During the Habitat for Humanity BBQ Cook-off, eight to 10 cookers will gather in Bicentennial Park around 10 p.m. Friday to begin cooking. Judging will be at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Those interested in participating can contact Habitat for Humanity at (336) 625-1429. Winners will be announced around 10 a.m.
The Downtown Farmer's Market, opening at 7 a.m., will host Strawberry Day and Sunset Theatre will be open. Tours will be available during the day.
Music in front of Monroe's Music will feature True Grass (bluegrass) at 11 a.m.; Bantum Rooster (oldies, rock-n-roll) at noon; Brittnee Loflin & Friends (southern gospel) at 1 p.m.; Concrete Evidence (country) at 2 p.m.; HeRose (Christian) at 3 p.m.; and Paparoxy (classic rock) at 4 p.m.
At 10 a.m., the Asheboro Appearance Commission will unveil an educational component of Mayor David Jarrell's anti-litter campaign called "Are You More Literate Than a 5th Grader?"
This event targets every fifth-grader in Asheboro City Schools and includes a 20-question test incorporating science, math, language arts and comprehension skills addressing an array of topics including water shed issues, anti-litter awareness, recycling, environmental health and community pride.
The five leading test scorers from McCrary, Lindley Park, Loflin and Balfour schools will face off in the 10 a.m. competition.
First-place winners will play against a team of city officials. Winners will be awarded prizes.
