ASHEBORO – Lucy Bowman Atkins, 86, of 509 E. Pritchard Street, died Friday, May 30, 2008 at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.

A graveside service was held May 31, 2008, at Randolph Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum with Rev. Don Ashley officiating.

She was a native of Patrick County, Va., the widow of James Alvin Atkins and retired from Bossong Hosiery.

Surviving are her family, Dot Rives and Kim Hudspeth, both of Asheboro, Chuck Hudspeth of Raleigh, Mark Hudspeth of Charlotte and Billy Rives of Florida.

Everette D. Benfield

RANDLEMAN – Everette Dean Benfield, 42, of Dean View Drive, Randleman, died May 24, 2008.

The funeral was held May 28, 2008, at Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting. Burial was in the church cemetery.

He was a member of Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting and was employed by Valspar.

Surviving are his wife, Carol Hedgecock Benfield; daughter, Heaven Benfield; sisters, Lorrie Gibson of Georgia and Tracy VanBoskerk of Trinity; brother, Darrin Benfield of High Point.

Clara O. Bunting

ASHEBORO – Clara Ozment Bunting, 90, of 400 Vision Drive, Asheboro, formerly of Russell Street in Asheboro, died Friday, May 30, 2008, at Randolph Hospital.

The funeral was held June 1, 2008, at the Ridge Funeral Home Chapel, with Charles Reeder officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Guilford County, had worked for Acme-McCrary Corp. and was the widow of Samuel J. Bunting.

Surviving are daughters, Faye King Austin, Pansy Harrington, Sue Allen and Deb Murray, all of Asheboro; sons, Gene Bunting and Bill Bunting, both of Asheboro; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 20 step great-grandchildren; three foster grandchildren; and three foster great-grandchildren.

ASHEBORO – William Page Craven, 81, formerly of 1336 Brooklyn Ave. Ext., Ramseur, died Monday, May 26, 2008, at Carillon Assisted Living of Asheboro.

A graveside service was held May 28, 2008, at Pleasant Ridge Christian Church Cemetery in Ramseur, with the Rev. Paul Griffin officiating with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

He was a native of Randolph County, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, co-owner and operator of Craven-Kivett Clothing Store in Ramseur, and was a member of Pleasant Ridge Christian Church.

Surviving is his wife, Velna Allen Craven.

Bernice S. Davis

ASHEBORO – Bernice Wood Skeen Davis, 87, of 1916 Lambert Drive, Asheboro, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.

The funeral was held May 31, 2008, at Oakhurst Baptist Church, with Dr. Richard Crider officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Wan Wilson Skeen, a member of Oakhurst Baptist Church and retired from Acme-McCrary Corp.

Surviving are her husband, Thurman Davis; daughter, Diane Skeen Smith of Greensboro; stepdaughter, Ruth Ann Luck of Asheboro; stepson, Roger Davis of Asheboro; two grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; two step great-grandchildren.

Bonnie W. Farrar

STALEY – Bonnie W. Farrar, 85, of 500 Shady Grove Church Road, died Thursday, May 29, 2008, at her home.

The funeral was held June 2, 2008, at Wesley Chapel C.F.C., where she was a member, with the Rev. Jimmy Moore officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Chatham County, retired from Acme McCrary, a deaconess and a member of the Usher Board and Missionary Department at her church.

Surviving are daughters, Debra Jordan of Houston, Texas, Kathy Cotten of Fayetteville, Sharon Spinks of Coleridge and Bonita Baldwin of Ramseur; sons, Thomas Farrar Jr. of Siler City, George Farrar of Gahanna, Ohio, Frankie Farrar of the home and Rickie Farrar of Ramseur; brothers, Floyd White and Troy White, both of Snow Camp, and Delacy White of Staton Island, N.Y.

Frances D. Fogleman

LIBERTY – Frances Delores Fogleman, 82, of Liberty, died Sunday, May 25, 2008, at Universal Healthcare in Ramseur.

The funeral was held May 28, 2008, at Loflin Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Johnson and the Rev. Bryan Fox officiating.

Surviving is her sister, Isabelle F. Mancuso of Liberty.

Beatrice W. Kennedy

ASHEBORO – Beatrice Wallace Kennedy, 94, formerly of George York Road, Randleman, died Monday, May 26, 2008, at Randolph Health & Rehabilitation in Asheboro.

A graveside service was held May 28, 2008, in Asheboro City Cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Cleveland Kennedy, formerly employed with Acme-McCrary, a member of Central Falls Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Surviving are her nieces, Mary Edythe Parks, Betty Lou Purvis, Patsyanna Barker, Teana Halby, Delores Burton, Hilda Pickett and Louise Crouse; nephews, Wallace Garner, Wilson Garner, Fred Garner and Herbert Garner.

Lillie M. Kirkman

RANDLEMAN – Lillie Maxine Kirkman, 91, formerly of Randleman, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation of Asheboro.

A graveside service was held May 30, 2008, at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Martha Welch officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, a graduate of Randleman High School, retired from Acme-McCrary, formerly employed with Lad & Lassie Sportswear and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Randleman.

Jean Leonard

ASHEBORO – Annie Jean Pritchard Leonard, 80, of Asheboro died Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Clapp’s Convalescent Nursing Home in Asheboro.

The funeral was held June 1, 2008, at Randolph Memorial Park with Pastor Dane Waggoner officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, was retired from Acme-McCrary Corporation, was a member of the Meadowbrook Church of Christ and the widow of Colon C. Varner.

Surviving are her husband, Jesse Leonard; stepdaughters, Charlotte Francom and Phyllis Martens, both of Asheboro; sister, Dot Yow of Randleman; four stepgrandchildren; seven step great-grandchildren.

Florence Lilly

SOPHIA – Florence Edna Lilly, 98, of 1359 Tower View Lane, died Saturday, May 31, 2008, at North Pointe Assisted Living Community in Randleman.

The funeral was held June 3, 2008, at First Wesleyan Church in Randleman, where she was a charter member, with the Rev. Don Hurlburt and the Rev. Alvin Newcomb officiating. Burial was in South Plainfield Friends Meeting Cemetery in Sophia. She was a native of Randolph County and the widow of Marshall H. Lilly.

Surviving are daughters, Elizabeth Frazier of Chesterfield, S.C., Alma Matthews of Asheboro, Iona Frazier of Pleasant Garden, Ila Flinchum of Kernersville and Rachel Lilly of Sophia; sons, Cletus Lilly of Randleman, Earl Lilly of Asheboro and Walter Lilly of Sophia.

Nancy M. Loflin

SEAGROVE – Nancy Mae Brower Loflin, 69, of 1180 Cagle Loop Road, Seagrove, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

The funeral was held May 30, 2008, at New Center Christian Church in Seagrove, with Pastor Jimmy C. Shirlen and the Rev. Junior Dawkins officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Charles Henry Loflin, retired from Klaussner Furniture Co. and was a member of New Center Christian Church.

Surviving are her daughters, Sherry James, Robin Hunt, Lori Pierce and Lisa Thompson, all of Asheboro; sons, Keith Loflin of Seagrove and Roger Loflin of Asheboro; sisters, Frances Brower of Asheboro, Shirley Freeman of Kernersville, Mildred Keeling of Asheboro and Brenda Aldridge of Asheboro; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Edna S. Miller

ASHEBORO – Edna Anna Schmidt Miller, 86, of 230 E. Presnell St., died Saturday, May 31, 2008, at Randolph Health & Rehabilitation in Asheboro.

No service was planned.

She was a native of Hudson County, N.J., and retired from Singer Kearfott.

Surviving are daughter, Edna Nagle of Kernersville; son, Byron R. Miller of New Jersey; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Barbara P. Poole

RANDLEMAN – Barbara Ann Powell Poole, 59, of 207 Village Ave., Randleman, died Friday, May 30, 2008, at her home.

The funeral was held June 2, 2008, at Bailey’s Grove Baptist Church in Asheboro, with the Rev. Jonathan Shook officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Cumberland County and formerly worked in the Bakery Department at Wal-Mart of Randleman.

Surviving are her husband, Herbert (Herbie) Poole of the home; two sons, Anthony Bennett of Asheboro and Jason Poole of Randleman; sisters, Mildred Lineberry of Randleman and Linda Bennett of Hope Mills; brothers, Jimmy Powell of Hope Mills and Mitchell Powell of Surf City; four grandchildren.

ASHEBORO – Ernest Milton “Stump” Price, 85, of Asheboro, died Monday, May 26, 2008, at High Point Regional Hospital in High Point.

The funeral was held May 29, 2008, at Spoon’s Chapel Christian Church in Asheboro, with the Rev. John Auler officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County and attended Spoon’s Chapel Christian Church.

Surviving are wife, Mozelle Price of the home; daughter, Brenda Price Hooker of Asheboro; four stepchildren; three grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

Polly Reece

TRINITY – Pauline “Polly” Mills Reece, 85, of Trinity, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at High Point Regional Hospital.

The funeral was held May 31, 2008, at Grace Baptist Church in Randleman, with the Rev. Marvin Patterson officiating.

Burial was in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Gratice A. Reece, attended Grace Baptist Church in Randleman, and owned and operated Polly’s Beauty Shop.

Surviving are her daughter, Beverly Lee of Trinity; son, Jeff Reece of Randleman; sister, Lorene Coltrane of High Point; two grandchildren.

James H. Shaw

GOLDSTON – James Henry Shaw, 68, of 260 Oren Gaines Road, died Wednesday, May 28, 2008.

The funeral was held May 31, 2008, at Meroney United Methodist Church in Bear Creek with the Rev. Jim Whitaker, the Rev. David Wade and the Rev. Don Daniel officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Chatham County, a building contractor and a member of Meroney United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Hilliard Shaw; daughter, Beth S. Yow of Sanford; son, Marty Shaw of Goldston; sisters, Mary Causey of Asheboro, Ethel Minton of Bear Creek, and Louise Dark, Brenda Hudson and Linda Hudson, all of Siler City; six grandchildren; one great-grandson.

He was a native of Randolph County, was employed with Energizer Battery Company, owned and operated Staley Lawn Care, and was a member of First Baptist Church in Ramseur.

Surviving are his wife, Terri Sheffield Staley of the home; son, B. L. Staley of the home; mother, Ellen Kirkman Staley of Ramseur.

The funeral was held June 4, 2008, at Deep River Baptist Church with the Rev. Garry Arnett and Rev. Gene Adcock officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, was a former employee of Ramseur Interlock and was a member of First Christian Church in Ramseur

Surviving are her husband, John W. Staley; son, Yanik Staley of Ramseur; daughter, Yesenia S. Greene of Liberty; brothers, Jerry Kidd of Germany, Terry Kidd and Kenneth Kidd, both of Asheboro, and Donald York of Ramseur; sisters, Peggy Brown of Bennett, Judy Brown of Ramseur, Patsy Raefield of Kannapolis and Ila Mae Shumate of North Wilkesboro; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild.

Linda T. Tate

ASHEBORO – Linda Florence Thacker Tate, 60, of 1751 Harvell St., Asheboro, died Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Randolph Hospital.

A memorial service was held May 31, 2008, at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Asheboro, with Brother Jim Lentz officiating.

She was a native of Rockingham County, retired from Burlington Industries as executive secretary and was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Surviving are her daughter, Tammy Kindley of Asheboro; brother, Floyd Thacker of Eden.

RANDLEMAN – Michelle Lynn Wood, 40, 1816 Lassiter Mill Road, Asheboro, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at her home. The funeral was held June 1, 2008, at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel in Randleman with the Rev. John Auler officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Randolph County, attended Randleman High School, was employed at Baker Furniture in High Point and was a licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator and First Responder.

Surviving are son, Drew Glenn of Sophia; daughter, Katie Kearns of Asheboro; mother, Shelby Jean Wood of Franklinville; sister, Alisa Wood Moran of Thomasville.

Minnie W. Yates

ASHEBORO – Minnie Myrtle Williams Yates, 84, of 2393 Zoo Parkway, Asheboro, died Friday, May 30, 2008, at Randolph Hospital.

The funeral was held June 1, 2008, at First Baptist Church with Dr. John Rogers and Dr. J.B. Gibson officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker, member of First Baptist Church, and former office manager at Randolph Farmer’s Mutual Fire Insurance.

Surviving are her husband, H. Wade Yates of the home; daughter, Patricia Yates of Kannapolis; son, Stephen W. Yates of Asheboro; sister, Alene W. Swaney of Trinity; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
