Architecture winners honored

ASHEBORO — Students from three area high schools have been chosen winners of the 2008 Alvis George Memorial Architecture Competition. The winners were honored at a gala reception June 18.

Consisting of both essay and design components, the competition is open to all high school students in Randolph County.

First prize for the 2008 Design Competition was awarded to Brittany Hodnett, a rising senior at Eastern Randolph High School.

For her design of a recreation center for the City of Asheboro, she received a scholarship to attend the N.C. State University College of Design’s Summer Design Camp in June.

“I have been waiting two years for this opportunity,” she said. “I am really looking forward to attending the summer camp.”

Honorable mention for the Design prize went to Preston Trotter, also a rising senior at ERHS. Trotter created a design for a new Zoo School.

The prize for the essay component of the competition was awarded Natalie Dwigans, a junior at Southwestern Randolph High School. Her theme was the North America entrance to the N.C. Zoo.

Kaci Markham of Asheboro High School took second prize for her essay on the new Cancer Center building at Randolph Hospital.

The purpose of the Alvis George Memorial Architecture Competition is to encourage the study and appreciation of architecture, and to provide a forum for students to test their skill and display their talents.
