Extension Service: 4-H fun
Randolph County 4-H ready for summer adventures
The heat is on and Randolph County 4-H is prepared for a hot summer full of adventures. But first I need to catch you up on what we’ve been up to in the past few weeks.
June has been declared National Dairy Month. In celebration, 4-H’ers were asked to participate in the Dairy Poster Contest. The theme for the 2008 Dairy Poster Contest is “Vote Dairy-Choose Milk, Cheese, and Yogurt for June Dairy Month.”
We had lots of great entries this year. Stop by Quotables in downtown Asheboro to check them out. This year’s winners are Joshua Allred in Division I, Adam Frazier in Division II and Terri Lane Frazier in Division III.
We also held poster contests in poultry and careers. The theme for this year’s poultry posters, “Chick Chat,” was a fun theme. These posters are displayed at Southern States in Asheboro.
The winners are Rachel Osborne for Division I and Heather Allred for Division II. Our career posters are displayed at the downtown Asheboro law office of L. McKay Whatley.
The age 9-10 winner is Addie Ward, the 11-13 winner is Laura Allred and Heather Allred is the winner for the 14-18 division. Congratulations to all our creative 4-H artists.
I want to fill everyone in on our fabulous night of Randolph County 4-H Entertains/Fashion Revue for 2008. This year’s event was hosted by the Green Leprechauns of North Asheboro Middle School with Cody Williams of the Happy Heifer Dairy Club serving as emcee.
It was entertainment from start to finish with the following acts taking the stage: Ben Talbott on the mountain dulcimer, Cooper Faile of Shepherd’s Way performing Ode To Joy on piano and the Country Kids Livestock Club performing a skit from the hit TV variety show Hee Haw.
C.J. Stickler, a member of the New Club and Lucky Country 4-H Clovers, recited the poem, “When Father Broke His Arm,” Dillon Ward of Shepherd’s Way demonstrated his karate skills, Rebecca Craven of the Happy Heifer Dairy Club performed a solo of “Fishers of Men,” the Green Leprechauns performed a group dance and Andy Hunt from the Country Kids Livestock Club entertained with his banjo.
Caleb Tinnin of the Lucky Country 4-H Clovers took the stage for a piano solo, Monica, C.J. and Tyke Stickler performed the song “One, Two, Three” and are all members of the New Club and Lucky Country 4-H Clovers.
The Happy Heifer Dairy Club performed a group skit entitled Happy Heifer Hula, Jessie Talbott took the stage with her hammer dulcimer and Terri Lane Frazier of the Happy Heifer Dairy Club played the piano.
The winners have the opportunity to move on to compete at the district level. Congratulations to Andy Hunt, Jessie Talbott and Ben Talbott.
A special thanks to to this year’s judges for talent: Philip Shore, director of the Randolph Arts Guild, Donna Beck, program director for the Randolph Arts Guild, and Dantzler Lewallen, retired teacher. These folks had a tough job and we are so appreciative of their commitment to youth programming.
The fashion portion of the evening was exciting as well with some beautiful garments sewn and modeled.
The following 4-Hers participated: Rebecca Craven of the Happy Heifer Dairy Club, Terri Lane Frazier of the Happy Heifer Dairy Club, Rachel Osborne of the Country Kids Livestock Club, C.J. Stickler of the Lucky Country 4-H Clovers and the New Club, Monica Stickler of the Lucky Country 4-H Clovers and the New Club, Tyke Stickler of the Lucky Country 4-H Clovers and the New Club, Ben Talbott – Special Interest, Jessie Talbott – Special Interest and Addie Ward of the Lucky Country 4-H Clovers.
