Mary B. Armstrong

ASHEBORO – Mary B. Armstrong, 87, of 938 Sequoia Ave., died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at Moses Cone Hospital.

The funeral was held Dec. 10 at Pugh Funeral Home with Dr. John Rogers officiating. Burial was at Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a Richmond County native, widow of Rubert Earl Armstrong, homemaker and member of First United Methodist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Gale Armstrong, Wanda Sullivan and Dedie Chapman, all of Asheboro, and Karen Crawford of Stafford, Va.; half brother, Bobby Brooks of Mooresville; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter.

Raymond W. Ayers

SEAGROVE – Raymond William “Paw Paw” Ayers, 66, of Seagrove, died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at Randolph Hospital.

A memorial service was held Dec. 13 at Boyles Cemetery Chapel.

Surviving are daughters, Tonya Ayers Johnson and Tammy Michelle Burns; stepsons, Tony Biggs and Michael Biggs; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.



Eva Bowden

LIBERTY – Eva Frances Smith Bowden died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

The funeral was held Dec. 11 at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Garner officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

Surviving are daughter, Magaline Shoffner of Liberty; John E. Bowden of Asheboro; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.



Eula Mae Burke

ASHEBORO – Eula Mae Young Burke, 83, of 1036 Avondale Ave., died Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at her home.

A memorial service was held Dec. 14 at First United Methodist Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Michael Holder officiating.

She was a Mebane native, widow of Frank Bradie Burke, formerly taught at Asheboro Commercial College and Randolph Community College, and retired from Wachovia Bank.

Surviving are daughters, Linda B. Hinson of Gastonia and Diana B. Collins of Greensboro; sons, Thomas B. Burke of Goldsboro and Jerry W. Burke of Salisbury; sister, Elizabeth Y. Nicholson of Mebane; brother, C.M. Young of Asheboro; 10 grandchildren; five great grandchildren.

Raeleigh B. Cooke

ASHEBORO – Raeleigh Briella Cooke, infant daughter of Tracey Campbell and Bobby Cooke of 226 Dunwoody Court, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at Randolph Hospital.

A graveside service was held Dec. 12 at Liberty Road Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Don Ashley officiating.

Surviving other than the parents are sister, Ellyrae Campbell of the home; brother, Traydon Hodge of the home; grandmothers, Nora Campbell of Staley and Emily Powers of Sidney, Ohio; grandfather, Charles Cooke of Randleman.

Marsha H. Cox

RAMSEUR – Marsha Humphrey Cox, 50, of 8583 N.C. 42 South, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at her home.

The funeral was held Dec. 12 at Deep River Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Strider, the Rev. Gene Adcock and the Rev. John Bryant officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

She was a Randolph County native, retired from Sapona Mfg. and member of Deep River Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Greg Cox of the home; son, Steven Cox of Ramseur; mother, Ola Poindexter Humphrey of Ramseur; sisters, Myra Humphrey Brown of Asheboro and Rodella Humphrey Bingham of Greensboro; brother, Oza Wade Humphrey of Ramseur.

Lynden H. Craven

RAMSEUR – Lynden Harris Craven, 72, of 4616 Holly Spring Road, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at his home.

The funeral was held Dec. 9 at Holly Spring Friends Meeting, where he was a member, with the Rev. Todd Brown officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

He was a Randolph County native, Vietnam War era Army veteran, member of the Randolph County Planning Board, retired from the Randolph County Public Works Department and a poultry farmer.

Surviving are his wife, Pattie Allen Craven; daughters, Judi Craven of Asheboro and Suzanne Craven Hayes of Seagrove; sisters, Virtle Holloway and Mary Purvis, both of Asheboro, and Clarice Cox of Coleridge; brother, Howard Craven of Franklinville; two grandsons.

Mary I. Craven

ASHEBORO – Mary Irene Craven of 736 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington.

The funeral was held Dec. 16 at Wesley Chapel AME Zion Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Raymond Mitchell officiating.

She was employed in home health.

Surviving are sisters, Ada C. Boyd of Philadelphia and Viola C. Franklin of Asheboro; brother, William L. Caviness of Niceville, Fla.



Loberta R. Hall

ASHEBORO – Loberta Rae Hall, 86, of 230 E. Presnell St., died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at Randolph Hospital.

The funeral was held Dec. 12 at Pugh Funeral Home with the Rev. Arnold Ray Comer officiating. Burial was at Liberty Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Mount Gilead.

She was a Montgomery County native, formerly employed by Sew Special, retired from Randolph Hospital and member of Grace Baptist Church, Seagrove.

Surviving are nieces and nephews.

Dolly H. Heritage

CONCORD – Dolly Jean Heath Heritage, 77, of Concord, formerly of Asheboro, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009.

A graveside service was held at Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a Grays Chapel native and formerly employed by Central Telephone Co.

Surviving are daughter, Karyl Heritage Pettus McClellan of Concord; son, Steven Heritage of South Carolina; two grandchildren.



Guynell B. Hunt

ASHEBORO – Lillie Guynell Blackwell Hunt, 80, of 356 W. Ward St., died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at Universal Health Care.

The funeral was held Dec. 12 at Pugh Funeral Home with the Rev. Daniel Thames officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a Jonesville, S.C., native, retired from Acme-McCrary and formerly employed by the Press Box Grill.

Surviving are her husband, William Boyd “Bill” Hunt; son, Ralph Blackwell of Asheboro; sister, Elizabeth Crosby of Tallahassee, Fla.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren.

Eli S. Jones

BENNETT – Eli Swanson Jones, 78, of 6840 Flat Creek Road, died Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at Universal Health Care.

The funeral was held Dec. 15 at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Chuck Rowland, the Rev. Ed Carter and Dr. Norman Hubbard officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery.

He was a Randolph County native, farmer and retired from Ramseur Interlock.

Surviving are his wife, Iris Garner Jones of Bennett; sons, Steven Jones and Randy Jones, both of Bennett; brother, Henry Jones of Asheboro; two grandchildren.

Charles W. Kluttz

ASHEBORO – Charles Wesley “Charlie” Kluttz, 81, of Asheboro, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009, at his home.

A memorial service was held Dec. 14 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. Ralph Kraft officiating.

He was a Waynesboro, Va., native, World War II Navy veteran, played basketball for Klopman Mills and retired from Dan River, Inc.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Goins Kluttz; daughters, Sheryl K. Barlow, Patricia K. Hall, Jane Kluttz; son, James C. Eller; sister, Florence Myers; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Jack W. McCollum

RANDLEMAN – Jack Woodrow McCollum, 85, of 184 McCollum St., died Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, at Randolph Hospital.

The funeral was held Dec. 15 at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member, with Dr. Dana Bunn officiating. Burial with military honors was at Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a Randleman native, World War II Navy veteran and owner of McCollum Oil Co.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Yow McCollum; son, Tim McCollum of Randleman; brother, Joe McCollum of Randleman; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Larry McNeil

RANDLEMAN – Larry Joe McNeil, 57, of 123 Depot St., died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at his home.

A graveside service was held Dec. 14 at Brick Yard Cemetery, Franklinville with the Rev. Terri Lindquist officiating.

He was a Randolph County native and formerly employed by Jockey International and the City of Randleman.

Surviving are his wife, Cathy Jones McNeil; daughters, Seliene Munoz of Randleman and Monica McNeil of California; mother, Marie Hill of Cedar Falls; sisters, Kathy Hill of Star and Pat Hill of Cedar Falls.



Ginger V. Needham

ASHEBORO – Ginger Vuncannon Needham, 52, of 818-B Windermere Court, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at her home.

A memorial service was held Dec. 10 at Pugh Funeral Home with Pastor Ray McCormick officiating. Burial was at Hopewell Friends Meeting cemetery.

She was a Randolph County native, attended Asheboro High School, member of East Side Baptist Church, and previously employed by Asheboro Drug and Rite Aid Pharmacy.

Surviving are daughter, Dainya Erickson of Asheboro; sister, Cathy W. Causey of Asheboro; brother, Scott Vuncannon of Monroe; stepfather, Sherrill Ambrose of Asheboro; three grandchildren.

Martha B. Pinson

TROY – Martha Jane Burnette Pinson, 94, of 2817 NC 134 N., died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at her home.

No service is planned.

She was a Pikeville, Ky., native, retired from Randolph Hospital and member of Troy Church of Christ.

Surviving are daughters, Marie Pinson of the home and Anne Pinson Lichtenberg of the home; sister, Opal B. Robinette of Pikeville, Ky.; one grandchild; five great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren.

Norman E. Smith

ASHEBORO – Norman Eugene Smith, 74, of 4889 Lanier Road, died Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at Randolph Hospital.

The funeral was held Dec. 11 at Seagrove Christian Church, where he was a member, with the Rev. L.D. Pritchard and the Rev. Wyatt Hoogkamp officiating. Burial was at Pleasant Ridge Christian Church cemetery.

He was a Randolph County native, 1954 Franklinville High School graduate, poultry farmer, formerly employed by Klopman Mills, and retired from Acme-McCrary Corp.

Surviving are his wife, Kitty Lee Cox Smith of the home; daughters, Welta Smith Causey King of Suwannee, Ga., and Myra Smith Hoover, Susan Smith Teague and Pam Smith Regan, all of Asheboro; sister, Peggy Smith Brewer of Asheboro; eight grandchildren.

SILER CITY – Henry Garland “Pete” Spinks of 3139 Delbert Lane, died Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at Randolph Hospital.

The funeral was held Dec. 15 at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, where he was a member. Burial was at the church cemetery.

He was a World War II veteran.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Cheek Spinks; daughters, Ethelene Isley of Raleigh, Wilma Johnson of Coleridge and Darlene Bartell of Ramseur; sons, Henry Spinks of Asheboro, Howard Spinks and Earl Spinks, both of Ramseur, Thurman Spinks of Bonlee, Alvin Spinks of Julian, Randy Spinks, Cecil Spinks and Casey Spinks, all of Coleridge, and Jeff Spinks of Sanford; brother, Ray Spinks of Ramseur; sisters, Ruth Staley of Ramseur and Lucy McSwain of Seagrove; 48 grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren; 19 great-great-grandchildren.



Ruth S. Toomes

RANDLEMAN – Ruth Staley Toomes, 82, of 889 Branson Mill Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009, at her home.

A graveside service was held Dec. 11 at Level Cross United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Fran Adams officiating.

She was a Guilford County native, widow of Ralph Vernon Toomes and member of Level Cross United Methodist Church.

Surviving are daughters, Rose T. Luck, Brenda T. Williams and Patti T. Hooker, all of Randleman; son, Donald Toomes of Randleman; brother, Franklin Eli Staley of Julian; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.

SOPHIA – Van “Junior” Turner Jr., 59, of 3307 Marcal Circle, died Monday, Dec. 7, 2009, at Moses Cone Hospital.

He was a Marlboro County, S.C., native and retired from Wagner Woodcraft.

Surviving are his wife, Kathy Stines of the home; daughter, Tammy Jean Turner of Sophia; sister, Margaret Ann Stevens of Archdale.



Lamer S. VonCannon

ASHEBORO – Lamer Genett Staley VonCannon, 84, of 3114 Zoo Parkway, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at Randolph Hospital.

The funeral was held Dec. 10 at Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Billy Jarrett and the Rev. Patrick Waynick officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a Randolph County native, widow of the Rev. Leonard VonCannon, member of Flag Springs United Methodist Church and homemaker.

Surviving are son, Phil VonCannon of Locust; sisters, Nordia Staley Robbins of Asheboro and Thelma Staley Burritt of Greensboro; two granddaughters.

ASHEBORO – Thomas L. Younts died Thursday, Dec. 10, 2009, at his home.
