William L. Ashworth

ASHEBORO – William Lewis Ashworth, 90, of 115 Sumner Place, Franklinville, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Universal Health Care of Ramseur.

The funeral was held Nov. 29, 2008, at Union Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Jeff Johnson and the Rev. Josh Hughes officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

He was a native of Montgomery County, the widower of Sarah Owens Ashworth, a retired Railroad Section Foreman and a member of Asbury Baptist Church.

Surviving are his son, James Lewis Ashworth of Franklinville; daughter, Annie Jane Beck of Ramseur; sisters, Mildred Hunt and Violet Rush, both of Asheboro, and Myrtie Ray of Sneeds Ferry; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren.



Irene K. Bauer

ASHEBORO – Irene Kovach Bauer, 93, of 230 E. Presnell St., Asheboro, Nov. 25, 2008, at Randolph Health & Rehabilitation of Asheboro.

The funeral was held Nov. 29, 2008, at Ridge Funeral Home in Asheboro, with the Rev. Mark Hall, the Rev. Koy Lee Haywood and Ken Bauer. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Barberton, Ohio, and was a member of First Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Kenneth Bauer of Asheboro; daughters, Claudia Mickel of Asheboro and Fay Caro, of Miami Lakes, Fla., and Ruth McDonald of Fayetteville, Tenn.; sons, Ken Bauer of Madison, Ala., and Paul Bauer of Seagrove; brothers, Joseph Kovach of Lexington, Ky., Louis Kovach of Michigan and Elmer Kovach of Palmyra, Mich.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren.

Edith M. Burroughs

ASHEBORO – Edith M. Burroughs, 86, of 310 Independence St., died Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, at Carolina Commons in Greensboro.

The funeral was held Dec. 4, 2008, at C.C. Hodges Funeral Chapel, with Dr. Reuben Gillian officiating. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Asheboro.

She was a native of Randolph County and a retired home caretaker.



Donald B. Craven

ASHEBORO – Donald Bean Craven, 73, of 1739 Harvell St., Asheboro, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at Randolph Hospital.

The funeral was held Nov. 29, 2008, at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jeff Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Franklinville United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

He was a native of Randolph County, a U.S. Army veteran, was retired from Centel/Sprint and was a member of Balfour Masonic Lodge #188.

Surviving are his wife, Kathy Craven; son, Eric Brandon Craven of Asheboro; stepsons, Mark Brady of Bennett and Ricky Brady of Randleman; sister, Evelyn Cheek of Asheboro; brother, Walter Raymond “Sonny” Craven Jr. of Asheboro; six grandchildren.

Alan Emery

ASHEBORO – James Alan Emery, 57, of Asheboro, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at Randolph Hospital.

The funeral was held Nov. 29, 2008, at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Robert E. Dowling officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, a 1969 graduate of Seagrove High School, formerly employed with Causey Aviation at Asheboro Airport and was a member of Seagrove United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his parents, James E. and Marie Emery of Asheboro.



Arvil D. Evans Jr.

GREENSBORO – Arvil Dewitt Evans Jr., 77, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at his home.

The funeral was held Nov. 30, 2008, at Faith Presbyterian Church, where he was a member. Burial with military honors was at Westminster Gardens Mausoleum.

He was a native of Franklinville, retired from the Greensboro New & Record, a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, served on the VFW Honor Guard and was a member of VFW Post 11533.

Surviving are his wife, Bonnie Hayes Evans; daughters, Pamela Klutz of Patterson, Ga., Vickie Duncan of King and Sandra Jones of Greensboro; sisters, Frances Greene of Troy, Mary Campbell of Asheboro and Brenda Lunsford of Asheboro; brother, Billy Evans of Altavista, Va.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Ellahelmena Foster

LIBERTY – Ellahelmena Foster, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.

The funeral was held Nov. 30, 2008, at Edwards Grove Baptist Church in Liberty. Burial was in Amos Grove Cemetery.

Surviving are her daughter, Clima F. Moffitt of Liberty; son, Benjamin Foster of Liberty; sister, Betty Ruth Lang of Jacksonville, Fla; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.



Larry C. Garner Sr.

ASHEBORO – Larry Clyde “Sundance” Garner Sr., 63, formerly of 1706 Pleasant Union Road, Trinity, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, at his home.

A memorial service was held Nov. 26, 2008, at the home of his son.

He was a native of Asheboro, formerly employed with Klopman Mills, Snow White and Garner Brothers.

Surviving are his son, Larry C. Garner Jr.; daughter, M. Danine Garner Arnold; stepmother, Barbara Garner; sisters, Phyllis Lanier, Sherry Chriscoe and Lisa Atkinson; brother, Michael Garner; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Thelma W. Hill

ASHEBORO – Thelma Jane Wright Hill, 93, of 500 Mountain Top Drive, Asheboro, formerly of Mack Road, Asheboro, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at Clapp’s Convalescent Nursing Home.

The funeral was held Dec. 1, 2008, at West Bend United Methodist Church, where she was member, with the Rev. David Cox and the Rev. Keys Pendleton officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery.

She was a native of Coleridge, the widower of the Rev. James H. Trolinger, the Rev. C.L. Grant and Dolen L. (Tom) Hill, a Sunday school teacher, a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the CUOC.

Robert “Lou” Kennedy

RANDLEMAN – Robert Louis “Lou” Kennedy, 59, of 458 Oakhurst Road, Asheboro, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at his home.

The funeral was held Nov. 29, 2008, at Midway Wesleyan Church in Randleman, with the Rev. J. Arnold Luther officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard.

He was a native of Randolph County, a 1967 graduate of Randleman High School, employed with Central Carolina Waste in Asheboro and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Surviving are his daughter, Michelle Whitaker of Denton; son, Bryan Kennedy of Denton; brother, Jeff Kennedy of Randleman; one grandchild.



Norman B. Kidd

RAMSEUR – Norman Bennett Kidd, 83, of 6065 Jasmine Lane, Ramseur, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, at Chatham Hospital.

A graveside service was held Nov. 26, 2008, at Maple Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. John Williamson officiating.

He was a native of Chatham County, retired from Ramtex, a past member of the Coleridge Lions Club and a member of Bennett Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Lou Elma Brown Kidd of the home; sons, Darrell Kidd of Greensboro and Brent Kidd and Mark Kidd, both of Coleridge; sisters, Dorothy Martindale of Bear Creek, Cordia Shelton of Glenola and Johnsie Bouldin of Bennett; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Debra M. Kiser

OXFORD – Debra Jean McDowell Kiser, 54, of 1511 College St., Oxford, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at Granville Medical Center in Oxford.

The funeral was held Nov. 30, 2008, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel in Asheboro. Burial was in Randolph Memorial Park.

She was a native of Randolph County, a registered nurse and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are her husband, Jon Kiser of the home; daughters, Nicole Harden and Jamy Parris, both of Forest City, and Jenna Brooke Hilton of Oxford; son, Matthew C. Hilton of Oxford; mother, Mattie Sue Simmons McDowell of Oxford; five grandchildren.

Florence B. Kiser

ASHEBORO – Florence Marie Brown Kiser, 74, of 3332 Staley’s Farm Road, Asheboro, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at Clapp’s Convalescent Nursing Home in Asheboro.

The funeral was held Nov. 30, 2008, at Flag Springs United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Billy Jarrett and the Rev. Thomas Smith. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, retired from Black & Decker and was an active member of Flag Springs United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Coy A. Kiser of the home; daughter, Tami Reeder of Asheboro; sons, Gregg Kiser of Asheboro and Roger Kiser of Goose Creek, S.C.; sisters, Jewel Lucas, Pearl Goins and Gladys Nance, all of Asheboro; brothers, Raiford Brown and Earl Brown, both of Asheboro, and Cline Brown of Summerville, S.C.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

Betty W. Lee

RANDLEMAN – Betty Woodham Lee, 74, of Randleman, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro.

A graveside service was held Nov. 28, 2008, at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery.

She was a a native of Lee County, S.C., the widow of Major C. Lee, was of the Baptist faith and was a homemaker.

Surviving are her son, Earl Cagle of Tennessee; sister, Thelma Coulborn of Raleigh.



Jerry McNeill

ASHEBORO – Jerry Wayne McNeill, 45, of 3885 Young Road, Asheboro, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

The funeral was held Dec. 1, 2008, at Ridge Funeral Home Chapel in Asheboro, with the Rev. Charles Dean officiating. Burial was in Mt. Tabor Community Church cemetery.

He was a native of Randolph County, employed with the Housing Center in Ramseur, and attended Faith Temple.

Surviving are his wife, Kathy A. McNeill of the home; son, Alex Andrew McNeill of the home; stepdaughter, Laura Renee Medley of the home; stepsons, Jason Todd Coltrane and Zachary Todd Coltrane, both of the home; mother and stepfather, Maxine McNeill and Roy Latham of Asheboro; sister, Sheila Goss Craven of Asheboro; brother, Jackie Elton McNeill of Asheboro.



John M. Maness

DENTON – John Mark Maness, 38, 315 Mose Glover Road, Denton, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, in Lexington, Tenn.

The funeral was held Dec. 3, 2008, at Loflin Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Ed Arroyo and the Rev. Tim Isley officiating. Burial was in Randolph Memorial Park.

He was a native of Randolph County, employed as a truck driver for RHJ Trucking in Mt. Airy, attended Eastern Randolph High School and was a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his parents, Jimmy and Frances Maness of Randleman; sister, Julie Maness Meney of Asheboro; fiancee, Linda Simkoff of Denton.



Virginia Marley

PLEASANT GARDEN – Virginia Marley, 85, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service was held Nov. 30, 2008, at Centre Friends Meeting with Rusty Parsons officiating.

Surviving are her husband, Cafer Marley of Pleasant Garden; daughters, Judy Dawson of Brown Summit, Elaine Kerns of Franklinville and Lelia Harrell of Suffolk, Va.; sisters, Louise Gilmore of Greensboro and Thelma Hoover of Jonesboro, Ga.; two grandchildren.



Denzil A. Richardson

RAMSEUR – Denzil Allen Richardson, 87, of Brooklyn Avenue Extension, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Clapps Convalescent Nursing Home.

The funeral was held Nov. 29, 2008, at Pleasant Ridge Christian Church, where she was a member, with the Rev. Paul Griffin officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She was a native of Randolph County, a homemaker and a former employee of Bossong Hosiery.

There are no immediate survivors.

Bud Rohrbough

ASHEBORO – Minter “Bud” Benjamin Rohrbough, 83, of 3803 Buffalo Ford Road, Asheboro, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, at Randolph Hospital.

A memorial service was held Nov. 29, 2008, at Loflin Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. David Schwartz officiating.

He was a native of Randolph County, a retired truck driver and past business owner of Beverly Auto Sales in Beverly, W.Va., a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and of the Presbyterian faith.

Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Rohrbough of the home; sons, James Rohrbough of Terra Alta, W.Va., Tom Rohrbough of Elkins, W.Va., Benny Rohrbough of Bridgewater, Va., and John Rohrbough of Verona, Va.; daughters, Benita Robyn Gray of Bennett and Shirley Currence of Elkins, W. Va.; stepdaughter, Kathi Simmons of Richmond, Va.; sister, Mary B. Allen of Novi, Mich.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.



Sylvester Scott

ASHEBORO – Sylvester “Skip” Scott, 74, of 351 Railroad St., died Friday, Nov. 28, 2008, at Moses H. Cone Hospital in Greensboro.

The funeral was held Dec. 2, 2008, at Greater St. John Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joseph Kearns and the Rev. Dallas Baldwin officiating. Burial was in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Asheboro.

He was a native of Randolph County and retired from Hedgecock Builders Supply Co.

Surviving are his sister, Nannie B. Scott of the home; brothers, Joseph Scott of New York, N.Y., David Scott of the home and J.T. Scott of Greensboro.



Mable A. Smith

ASHEBORO – Mable Alford Smith, 88, of 1819-B Saddlewood Court, Asheboro, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, at her home.

A memorial service was held Nov. 26, 2008, at First Baptist Church, with Dr. John S. Rogers officiating. Burial was in Willis-Epperson Cemetery in Willston, Fla.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Asheboro.

Surviving are her daughter, Pamela Miller of Boone, N.C.; sisters, Myrtle Edwards and Leatte Braswell, both of Eastman, Ga.; one grandchild; one great-grandchild.

RANDLEMAN – Katie Tucker Underwood, 90, of 301 Fox St., Randleman, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008, at her home.

A graveside service was held Nov. 26, 2008, at Randolph Memorial Park in Asheboro, with the Rev. John Ferguson officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Colon Underwood, a member of Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church and retired from Burlington Industries.

Surviving are her daughter, Janice Stevens of Randleman; sisters, Christine Brantley of Asheboro and Lillie Mae Linthicum of Sophia; one grandchild; one great-grandchild.

ASHEBORO – Iola Mae Tolbert Yates, 92, of Mountain Vista Health Park in Denton, died Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at Randolph Hospital.

A graveside service was held Nov. 26, 2008, at Pleasant Union Community Church Cemetery in Denton, with Rev. James Cooper officiating.

She was a native of Randolph County, the widow of Eugene Yates, retired from Acme-McCrary Corp., and was a member of Mt. Shepherd United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her daughters, Iris Lassiter of Asheboro and Pam McCoy of Spartanburg, S.C.; sister, Gladys Jarrell of Asheboro; three grandchildren.
