50 Years Ago – Sept. 24, 1958
From The Randolph Guide
Asheboro citizens will vote Sept. 30 on a $2 million bond referendum to finance a sewage treatment plant, outfall lines and extension of sewer service. The vote will culminate nearly 20 years of planning by various administrations. Plans were set aside in the past for more pressing needs such as schools and the water system.
Interest in the need for sewer facilities was revived two years ago when consulting engineers were asked to conduct a survey and to bring the old plans up to date with present needs. City officials have said that Asheboro has been without sewage treatment in recent years and raw waste is being dumped into Penn Wood Branch and Deep River. The old Imhoff tank near the former Garland Lake has lost its effectiveness.

Judge W. Reid Thompson of Pittsboro has denied a motion of suppression of evidence in connection with some 70 gallons of taxpaid liquors and wines seized by officers in a search of the United Brass Works Inc. plant. The Superior Court judge said he could find no precedent for the motion and noted that the case could be disposed of through regular court channels. Meanwhile, officers served a warrant charging Irvin Berkelhammer, president of United Brass, with possession of taxpaid liquor and wines, the judge said.

A striking employee of United Brass in Randleman was charged with simple assault Monday morning following a picket line incident at the gate of the plant. The charges were brought by William A. Briles, a United Brass employee, against Julius Alex Brigman, one of the strikers. The police report quotes Briles as saying he was reporting for work when he was stopped by several strikers on the picket line. He was asked if he were going to work and he said he was. One of the strikers, he said, cursed him and Brigman then slapped him in the face.
Briles said he then drove away and later reported the incident to his supervisor. Brigman was served the warrant at the picket line and taken to Randolph County Jail to provide appearance bond for a later hearing.
