Hot weather and its effect on working conditions was a concern of the Randolph County grand jury this week. The jurors recommended that the courtroom and grand jury rooms be air conditioned.
The grand jury, in its report to the court, noted that “air conditioning in the courtroom and grand jury room would increase efficiency.”
It was the second grand jury report in recent months to make such a recommendation.
The report said the jurors toured county facilities on their regular inspection and gave a favorable assessment in general, except for noting minor repairs needed at the county home, tax office, clerk’s office and sheriff’s office.
The report commended Superintendent Renegar and Mr. Jackson of the Prison Camp staff for the “very efficient job they are doing.”
J. C. Hammond was named foreman of the grand jury.

The City of Randleman’s $155,000 bond issue was overwhelmingly approved by more than 250 voters in a special election yesterday.
The vote of Proposition 1, which called for $48,000 for additional water supply, was passed 190 to 63. Proposition 2, calling for $107,000 for additional sewer facilities, got the nod by a vote of 189 to 61.
Mayor Pat Martin, addressing the Randleman Chamber of Commerce, estimated that the bond issue would increase the sewer system by 75 percent, making sewer service available to some 80 percent of the city. He termed it the “biggest issue to face the city in recent years.” He said it would “... place the city in a better position to solicit new industries and make the city a better place in which to live.”

B.B. Walker Shoe Company of Asheboro announced this week that production will begin in late July on a U.S. government contract for shoes, totaling nearly a quarter-million dollars.
The contract, for 32,640 pairs of black, hightop safety shoes, amounts to $223,701.60. The contract was awarded by the Military Clothing and Textile Supply Agency of the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot through competitive bidding.
Walker officials said production currently is more than 11,000 pairs per week by working overtime. The volume of orders continues heavy, they report, and is expected to increase as the fall season approaches.

A mobile X-ray unit will be in the Asheboro area from Saturday, June 28, through Saturday, June 26, for a chest X-ray survey with emphasis on industrial groups.
This, according to Randolph County Health Director Dr. H.C. Whims, is the only scheduled visit of the unit for this year.
Everyone in the Asheboro area ages 15 and up is asked to take advantage of the opportunity to get a free X-ray while the unit is in town.
