Asheboro commissioners approved a request Thursday to rezone a tract of land across Dixie Drive from the high school to allow a retail business on the site.
The property, owned by the Ingram Estate, is located at the southwest corner of Dixie Drive and Park Street. It’s the only quadrant at the intersection not owned by the City Schools.
Rezoning had been considered for several months with no opposition voiced at the public hearing.
Speaking for the request, John Randolph Ingram said the owners had received an offer from an oil company interested in developing the property for a filling station.

A linesman for Weeks & Andrews Construction Co. narrowly escaped serious injury yesterday when he was knocked unconscious by the flash caused when he crossed two wires of a 1,200-volt circuit.
Marvin Collie was on a pole near the intersection of Wainman Avenue and Church Street at the time, repairing a primary feeder line. The flash created by crossing the two lines caused Collie to lose consciousness for a few moments. He was helped down the pole by a fellow employee, Donald Ray, and rushed by ambulance to Randolph Hospital.
Collie was kept overnight at the hospital for observation.
